Yesterday I got to spend some time in my sewing room and I managed to get two blocks each done for Carol and Pat. This means that Pat's blocks are all completed and are on their way to her and Carol's are on their way to Margaret. You can see pix over on flickr.

Early on in the round robin, I saw Alicia's blocks and began to hyperventilate ... thought that block beyond me. When the package arrived with the sunny lanes block, I realized it was just 4 patches and half-squared triangles - piece of cake...lol. Well I finished up the two blocks early this morning and headed off to the area post office, only to find that they weren't open on Saturday. What! When did this happen? Oh well, Monday then! Now I'm waiting for the next 3 and I will have made blocks for all!!!

Christmas In July For Lynn

Whew! The. Pressure. Is. Off! Sewing Lynn's Christmas block takes care of the backed up packages!

Several shouts and sighs could be heard from my sewing room the last two days while putting this block together. The corner blocks got me, and I sewed two corner sets three times. I actually ran out of the neutral fabric, so I had to piece some fabric together and cut the triangles out individually.

Finally, though, the corners came together and matched sides with the center block. Looks like Lynn will have quite a lovely quilt when all the blocks are joined together. -- michele

Snail's Trail for Pam

This block turned out to be my best pieced work yet! It helped that I found a lovely little choice on my machine screen named "1/4"." Hello? How long have I had my machine and didn't notice that -- 6 years! So, I didn't have to mark out quarter-inch lines; the machine did it all perfectly for me, and I have a 12.5" square for Pam! Very gratifying for me, too.

The snail trail block looks so much more impressive in person. I wasn't sure how to get a good shot of this one, and the blocks Pam made herself are very striking with the deep, rich colors she used. You'll enjoy making this block.

You know, things became a bit backed up on this end with the loss of one of our members in the spring, no packages at all for me to sew until May, and then nearly five packages of blocks for me to sew showing up within a few weeks of each other right when my work away from home increased. Along with that, sewing pieced blocks is new for me, and I'm driven to perfection and matching styles, so, despite my newish quilting skills, a lot of thought goes into thinking through the design each member has chosen as well as choosing the most perfect fabric for the block in the hopes that each of you will be very happy with my work when the piece arrives at the end of the round robin. I hope the blocks are worth the wait on your end; I'm enjoying working through each little project. -- michele

Christmas Tree Block for Margaret

Not knowing for sure what to do for Margaret, I checked out some tutorials and saw one on the purl bee for small trees and bounced from there. I have to say, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the exact 12.5" outcome of this block! That would be because it was freestyle, and I straightened and measured as I went along, and 1/4" seams did not matter!

Posy Pinwheel for Pat

Another Posy Pinwheel for Pat is finished and added to her package, which goes out to Rene tomorrow. It was fun to pull out some traditional and vintage florals to combine for this pattern. This is the third pinwheel block I've put together this year, and I'm enjoying making the "flying geese." I just need to work on getting those seams perfect. I mark out the 1/4", but there is still some wonkiness to deal with. Pat, hope you enjoy this set of fabrics, close up below. I'll send some pieces to your home address for your stash. -- michele

Batiks for Carol

As promised, the bee sewing begins! Here is Carol's block of batik squares, triangles, and rectangles. The block design came from an old Quilts & More magazine. I tried to adjust down for Carol's dimensions, but it ended up larger than the magazine version! I marked all my 1/4" seam lines for near perfection, and still ... It was too pretty to rip out, Carol. Here is another view. My idea is that you chalk your seam line all around at the 10.5" dimension. I tried it out by pressing the edges back. The points of the dark inner frame and corners of the outside pink blocks get cut off, but it does give the block a more edgy look or sort of an off-set feel. It was better not to trim here, though, or some of the smaller seam lines could come loose. As well, it might work out that you can use a little wiggle room! -- michele

Michele's Block Update

Hi Ladies! Hope you are getting to enjoy a 3-day weekend. Today is my first day off since May 2! The joys and slight pain of running one's own business, but all is well. There hasn't been much time in the schedule or room in my brains for creativity the last four months or so. I had no idea how hard my schedule would become while working with an account I took on six months ago. That account is finished as of two weeks ago, and blue skies are ahead --- as well much needed time in the sewing studio!

Pam sent me Margaret's blocks last week. I just opened the package, and Margaret -- You will love your blocks when they get back to you.

Carol sent me her batik block, which I received in early May. I have the batiks ready to go.

Sometime last month, one of you asked if you could send me one large package of the backed up blocks. I thought it was Pam when her bulky package arrived, but the package just includes Margaret's blocks. So, if you know you've sent me a package, please let me know, as I have a mountain of mail to go through. I'm organizing the studio this weekend and getting ready for a sew marathon in June, and my round robin blocks are top priority.

Since it isn't pretty to have a photo-less post, I'm taking the opportunity to show off this 93-piece block made for my other bee, One Block Over, back in March. It wasn't too bad to put together, but that could have been because I only had one block to sew and the bee partner precut all the pieces for us! How I wish I could have an entire quilt made of this block! It would be something to cherish. -- Michele

I have been busy this week. I finished my triangle quilt, made 4 blocks for the Quilt Block Exchange, turned an extra block into a doll quilt sandwich (ready to quilt) and I got blocks done for two of you in this round robin.

Here are all of Wendy's blocks. I made the right and left ones in the center row.

Now I need to get to the post office and get everything in the mail!

As I was uploading the pictures into iPhoto I realiazed that I have now done six of the eleven blocks for the round robin (that includes mine). How is everyone else doing?

I've restarted these blocks and have sent them directly to Michele. For those who want to get a head start on them here are the basics. They are 10 1/2 inches, made from batiks, the basic patters are triangles, squares and rectangles. I would like a piece of fabric so I can add some squares and triangles in the border to tie it all together. Have fun.

Rainbow Block for Rene

Ladies, I'm on a roll! The Rainbow Block Rene chose is a great one. Beyond being a stash buster and easy to make, it is a very good block to feature a pretty fabric line, like the Meadowsweet I love so much. I've been trying to collect all the pieces of the Meadowsweet group the last couple of months and have wondered how to feature each colorway. This block could give a peek to each style and variation of the line without using too much and could be sashed in one of the larger prints. Sounds like a plan!

So, the only trick left here is for me to remember where I'm putting Rene's block until the package comes my way. As soon as I create the place for it, I'll post it here so I can refer back!

Island Batik Maple Leaf

My first contribution to the Round Robin is complete! Wendy's Batik Maple Leaf. Early in the year, my fabric store had a great new set of islandy batiks. As I cut the pieces for Wendy's fall maple leaf, I thought this would be an odd fall leaf with a summery feel, but the colors are great together. I didn't do a final squaring, as I am so new to precise quilt blocks. I'll leave that to you, Wendy. However, I did mark out every 1/4" edge, so it's as close to perfect as I can get it! -- michele

Here are the two pinwheels blocks I added to Pat’s collection. At first I didn’t think I had flower fabric that I could use. To my surprise I found lots of options. I chose the purple because it was my Moms favorite color. The yellow and green drew my eye because the crocuses and daffodils are coming up and it reminded me of spring. Which is finally coming to Vermont.

Here are my two additions to Margaret's tree collection. The one on the left is a smaller version of a wall hanging I did for Each of my daughters for Christmas. The one on the right was a experiment of trying to use small bits of fabric with out a real pattern. It turned out better then I thought when I first started.

Hey everyone! Hope everyone is having fun with the round robin so far. Just wanted to check on the progress we are making. After one month everyone has sent their original blocks out and should be sending the first set of blocks they received from someone else on. I have to admit I have two sets here to work on but this week I have both grandkids here (Clara, 20 months, and Layden,4) so there really won't be any sewing getting done but the round robin blocks will be my first project when they are back home with their mommy and daddy.

Hi everyone! This is Michele of calicodaisy handmade. After much agonizing and fabric arranging and block reviewing, I decided on and sewed up my block for the Round Robin exchange. Rene has been very patient reading my apologetic e-mails while my choices were made. Thanks Rene!

While checking out Quilters Cache for a suitable block, I came across a pattern that made the decision for me. The Chisholm Trail block - our family name!

After deciding the color scheme, I sewed up my block. I'm not very experienced with piecing blocks, so this one was a bit fiddly to handle, but I think it turned out well. My package that travels around will include 11 little baggies with the proper amount of Kona Snow cloth for you to use. My request of each participant is that you choose two fabrics from your stash, red and robin's egg blue, to complete the block. It will be great if your choices have a petite print of dots or something modern but not fruit or fussy flowers, please. Of course, I'll have all this information with the package.

Not that I haven't seen this color combination before, as have you, but the quilt that inspired my final choice was one created by Angie at My Three Sons.

I'm looking forward to working on each of your blocks over the next year!

I posted a thread over at the Flickr group asking everyone for an update on the blocks. I set February 15 as the deadline to get your starter block(s) in the mail. I know that some people have already sent off their second set of blocks but I would kind of like to track all of the blocks so I would love it if you would add a comment over here to help me out.

I will be heading out on Wednesday for my quilt retreat and won't have internet access until Sunday so don't be surprised if you don't hear from me at all. I will be very busy sewing!

What a busy couple of weeks I have had. Lots of round robin, exchange and other projects to get finished by today and I did it!

Pinwheel in a Block

I have finally found a block that I liked. I tried one idea and just was not happy with it at all. So searching and searching what I would like to do, I found one!

They are pretty simple to make and pretty fast too. I like the pink, green and blue tied together. So Pink for the edges, green for the 1st square and then blue for the pinwheels. Then I want a neutral colors for the "white" part. I used white as well and a neutralish brown. But I think you can get the idea! Now I just need to send it along.

Which Mary I got your package this week! I have been so busy that I haven't had time to get to it! But as soon as I made some blocks I will post it!

Scrappy Rainbow Block

After making several blocks and going back and forth, I decided on my block.

Most of the quilts I make tend to gravitate towards the girly look. This is great for me, but I live in a house of 5 and I am the only girl :) I would like this quilt to be colorful and fun.
My inspiration came from here and here.
I hope everyone has fun making my blocks, that was my ultimate goal :)
I used 4 inch colored squares. The rectangles between the squares is Kona white 2.5 x 4 inches. The sashing is 2.5 x 15.5 inches.
I do ask that you would use Kona white for the background of your colored squares. I get mine at Joann's using the 1/2 price coupon. If anyone needs this, please ask. I would be happy to send you some if needed. I would like 2 blocks, and if possible would like each colored square to be different. All colors are welcomed as this is suppose to be a RAINBOW of colors :)
When I receive all of my blocks I will connect them together with 2.5 inch white sashing. I think it will make a wonderful and fun quilt!

I think there is still some confusion out there as to how this all works.

So here is an example:

Lynn fills out her paper and decides what kind of blocks she wants to get. She makes one block and packages it up with her papers and sends it to Pat.

Pat receives the package and reads over the papers learning interesting new things about Lynn and also starts thinking about the block she will make for Lynn using Lynn's preferences and desires as a guideline. She makes the block and packages it up with the papers and Lynn's original block and sends it off to Margaret.

Margaret receives the package and reads over the papers learning interesting new things about Lynn and also starts thinking about the block she will make for Lynn using Lynn's preferences and desires as a guideline. Margaret makes a block and packages it up with the papers, Lynn's original block and Pat's block and sends it off to Carol.

Carol receives the package and reads over the papers learning interesting new things about Lynn and also starts thinking about the block she will make for Lynn using Lynn's preferences and desires as a guideline. Carol makes a block and packages it up with the papers, Lynn's original block, Pat's block and Margaret's block and sends it off to Wendy.

Wendy receives the package, makes a block, adds it to the package and sends to Pam.

The process repeats through Jenn, Michele, Rene, Mary and Crystal and when it comes to me there will be blocks made by everyone but me. I add my block, still using Lynn's preferences as a guide. I package up all the blocks and the papers and mail it to Lynn and she will have at least one block made by each person in the round robin.

It is usually better to wait until you receive a package to start making your block to better match the colors/style that the person is asking for.

Hello to everyone - I'm excited about starting our round robin, it will be great fun to participate in everyone's design ideas!

I've finally decided on my round robin request. I moved to Connecticut from Washington State 12 years ago. Fall colors are one of my favorite things about New England, and I thought it was about time I made a maple leaf quilt.

This is my inspiration quilt.

Here are the blocks I made:

I have a great orange and green batik which has been sitting in my stash for years which I plan to use for the border and/or sashing. I would prefer mostly batiks, batik-like or tone-on-tone fabrics for the leaves and background, but I am very open to colors. I like whimsical quilts, and realistic accuracy is not important to me in this case. I would like the leaves to be 9.5" unfinished, and a classic leaf pattern can be found lots of places, here is one. However, if you have a different leaf pattern or want to try a free-form leaf, go for it!

I'm excited to see what returns to my mailbox in 12 months!

I deleted my previous post. I never could get the pinwheel to come out the way I wanted it to, so I started over from scratch and created my own paper pieced pinwheel template in EQ6. I will make my block tomorrow and post...Gotta love EQ!

I can sure tell this swap is going to be alot of fun, cant wait to get started, I have my package ready to mail out.
This block is called Double Aster and just happens to be one of my favorite blocks, not only the end results but to make. It is very easy!
I am so looking forward to each of your blocks colors, all colors under the sun. Would like complementary colors to be put together in each block, and yes I will make more than one block , just request it, like those have here and I will do it. Did I ever tell anyone that I LOVE making blocks and sit at my sewing machine nearly all day and at least til 10:30 every night. I had both legs operated on in 2009 which caused me to have to sit while recovering, well what else to do but sew, I discovered block swaps and the rest is history, I am addicted! I am several other swaps with some of you. Love them all!
I will be sending the black background fabric and a individual pattern for each of you, it is on quilterscache, I owe them the credit for this fun block.

Greetings!

It's always fun to be doing another swap (as though I don't have enough pans in my fire already!!). Thought I'd just say a quilt "Hi", and show the 4 blocks that I have made to which you will be adding to. If you are willing to make 2 blocks rather than just one, I will do the same for you when I get your blocks. I have just one request of my 12.5" blocks...please send a small scrap of one of the fabrics you used (somewhere around a 4"x4" or 3"x12" or whatever size scrap). I'd like the next people to consider trying to use one or more of the scraps with the blocks so that when I get all blocks back, they really look like they are homogenous.

In case you can't tell, my design for these blocks is fanciful Christmas trees. They may be completely whimsical and modern or very much more traditional in design. I love the variety, but I prefer that these are NOT appliqued. I don't mind some of the holiday prints, but not novelties. I like a red and green only color theme, with bits of white, tan and brown being also acceptable. No beige/off-white please. If you do choose to use whites, kindly avoid the thinner (cheaper) ones which the dark threads show through. I think Kona and Bella are good weight solids. I will sash the blocks in white, so if you use a border, please select a color for it besides white. Have fun!!
